Author's Purpose

This week in 2nd grade,  we focused on Author's Purpose and the Election Process.  Below is our anchor chart for reading.  We used the acronym PIE to represent author's purpose as to persuade, to inform, or to entertain. We discussed the main idea of stories and how to use details to help us support our thinking.

The class read the book, Duck for President and we also went through the voting process as we voted for Duck or Farmer Brown. Below is an online reading of the story.
We had so much fun tallying our votes and graphing the results in math.

In math, we worked on the expanded form of three digit numbers.  Below is our anchor chart:
We worked to determine the value of each digit in a number by representing it in base ten blocks.  Next week we will be focusing on skip counting with 3 digit numbers and using the place value to support our thinking.

We also spent some time working on persuasive writing in class.  Students are working to state their opinion, use details to support their thinking and then restate their opinion.  We wrote about Farmer Brown and Duck this week.  Check out some of our work below!
