Q4 Week 3

Welcome to Week 3!  This week we will focus on an important reading skill that will support our review push in the coming weeks.

Why is teaching context clues important?
Teaching context clues can increase a student's vocabulary & reading comprehension. Studies show that a strong vocabulary correlates with strong reading comprehension.

Use the resources below to enhance your present teaching of context clues.  Flip your classroom and allow students to view the videos before a mini-lesson or as a review.

Here is a video to use with your students when explaining different types of context clues.
I love this video for practicing context clues.  It would work perfectly in the younger grades.

Q4 Week 2

Welcome to Q4 Week 2!  This week let's talk vocabulary acquisition! The process of learning & understanding new vocabulary to help support both oral and written comprehension.

Students ages 5-10 learn approximately 8 new words a day!

What are the key features of VA?

  • Identifying keywords and their meanings using text features
  • Focusing on understanding & using vocabulary rather than simply defining words
  • Emphasizing connections to prior knowledge, other vocabulary words, and concepts
  • Differentiating between scientific meanings and everyday use
  • Facilitating differentiated instruction

Help your students understand the 3 Tiers of Vocabulary Acquisition!
Tier 1: Everyday Words
Tier 2: Words that they are only exposed to a few times
Tier 3: Subject and content-specific words
Simple Ways to support VA in the classroom!
